
The Science of Optimal Concentration: Why Process Focus Wins in Competition
During the summer before my third year in my clinical psychology doctoral program, I interned at the Center for Children and Families at Florida International University, working within their Summer Treatment Program (STP) with adolescent males diagnosed with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder. One of the primary intervention tools was sport, not as recreation, but as treatment. Children earned points for sportsmanship, following rules, and ignoring provocation. The program rewarded how they played, not the outcome. That distinction has shaped my clinical and sport psychology work ever since because it reflects exactly what the performance science tells us: process focus, not outcome thinking, is the foundation of consistent high performance.
Concentration is not about trying harder. It is about directing attention deliberately toward task-relevant cues and away from outcome-driven distractions. The athlete who performs best under pressure is rarely the one thinking about the scoreboard. It is the one immersed in execution.
Performance cues are the building blocks of this. A performance cue is a specific, controllable, task-relevant thought, image, or sensation that anchors attention to execution the release point of a pitcher’s hand, the tempo of a swimming stroke, a single action phrase like “through the target.” Without defined cues, distraction fills the space automatically.
Distractions are both internal (“Don’t miss again.” “Everyone is watching.”) and external (crowd noise, officiating, weather). What distinguishes elite performers is not immunity to distraction it is the speed of recovery from it.
Effective refocusing follows a three-step sequence: Recognize, Regroup, Refocus. First, notice that attention has drifted. Second, interrupt it with a brief reset, which entails a breath, a cue word, a physical anchor (“Stop — next play”). Third, re-anchor immediately to the relevant performance cue. In competition, this takes one to two seconds. The measure of attentional skill is not how rarely distraction occurs it is how quickly the athlete returns.
This mirrors a behavioral principle I watched play out daily at the STP. Children with ADHD earned points specifically for ignoring a negative stimulus, noticing a provocation and choosing not to engage it. That is metacognitive awareness in action. It is trainable. And it is exactly what elite athletes do when they recover from a bad call, a missed shot, or a hostile crowd.
Process goals reinforce this attentional structure. Unlike outcome goals such as rankings, scoring, and winning, process goals target controllable behaviors. Examples of this are committing to the routine, staying present, and executing the game plan. When athletes are held accountable to process, outcomes improve. The STP daily report cards tracked behavioral process, not wins. The performance data followed.
Equally important: effective concentration is rhythmic, not constant. Sustained hyper-focus leads to cognitive fatigue. The best performers engage in deliberate bursts of attention during execution, then genuinely reset between plays. Coaches can reinforce this by building brief transition rituals into practice because what feels like rest is attentional training.
Define the cues. Anticipate the distractions. Train awareness. Rehearse the refocusing protocol before it is needed. Reinforce process over outcome in how you give feedback.
When athletes understand that distraction is inevitable, but lingering is optional, everything shifts. They stop chasing perfect focus and start committing to rapid refocus. That shift, from hoping to training, is where optimal performance begins.
Focus on execution. Notice distraction. Refocus quickly. Repeat.
